Phillip J. Sanchez “Coach”, 80, of Hobart, formerly of Hammond, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family, the morning of Thursday, September 7, 2023.
He is survived by sons; Mark (Kari) Sanchez, Michael (Jessica) Sanchez and Robert Paul Sanchez, siblings; Theresa Dewitt, Paula Gomez, Jessie Rattray, Frank Sanchez, Sid Sanchez and Uncle Long.
Preceded in death by his loving wife of 47 years; Carol Sanchez, parents; Felipe and Apolonia Sanchez, son; Steven Michael Sanchez, and brothers; John Sanchez, Joseph Paul Sanchez and Little Joe Sanchez.
Phillip was born in Kansas City, Missouri to Felipe and Apolonia Sanchez. He was raised in Gary, Indiana and graduated from Calumet High School. He was then drafted into the US Army, loyally serving our country overseas while in Korea. Phillip later went on to marry Carol, and they began a life and family together in Hammond, Indiana. It was there that he soon found his niche in life – coaching baseball, football and wrestling. Phillip mentored a countless number of students, coaching for numerous High Schools. This was his true passion in life, dedicating 50+ years to local schools across Northwest Indiana. By trade, however, Phillip was a Power Plant Operator for Inland Steel, where he retired after 37 diligent years.
Phillip loved his family, friends and neighbors dearly, and will greatly be remembered for ‘always having a smile on his face.’ He will be loved and missed by so many.
