Beloved husband, brother, father, uncle, and grandfather Ames William Martin Sr. went to be with his Lord on Monday, September 2nd, 2024.
He leaves behind his bride of 43 years, Sherry Lee (whom he loved with his whole soul); six children, Maria (Trevor) Woodworth, Elizabeth (Ali) Khadem, Abigail (Brad) Mitzelfelt, Ames Martin Jr., Josiah Martin, and Ian Martin; nine grandchildren, Mia, Silas, Liam, Everett, Esther, Jesse, Julius, Clayton, and David; two sisters, Jaime (George) Stein and Regina (Lloyd) Bohl; two brothers, James (Donna) Martin and Shaun (Robin) Martin; many beloved nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, in-laws, and cousins as well as his faithful dog, Frankie. He is preceded in death by his cherished parents, James and Corrine Martin.
Ames was born in Chicago on February 25th, 1955 and graduated from Thornwood High School in 1973. He spent over 45 years as a member of the Local 150 Operating Engineers. Ames was an avid reader, fisherman, map collector, and mushroom hunter. He was also an amateur herpetologist and enjoyed learning and teaching others about reptiles, a piece of information he failed to mention to his wife until after the wedding. He loved Western movies, being a grandfather, the Grateful Dead, sandwiches, yelling at the radio, dogs, outlandish ice cream flavors, Louis LAmour novels, country drives, and the Lord (this list is not in priority order).
He instilled a love of reading, nature, and family in all his children. He is gone too soon and our grief is impossible to explain. We are comforted to know we will meet again on heavenly shores.
Go rest high on that mountain
Because, son, your work on earth is done
Go to heaven a-shouting
Love for the Father and the Son
The family is holding private services on September 13th and 14th. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Church in The Country of Rayburn, Texas or the Rattlesnake Conservatory.
