David Hines, 74, of Medaryville, IN passed away Friday, December 10, 2021.
David was born June 1st, 1947 in Hobart, IN, to Aubrey and Virginia (Groomer) Hines.
David proudly served in the Army as a team leader with Company A, 3rd Battalion (Airborne). 503 Cavalry infantry in the Republic of Vietnam. Sargent Hines was a highly decorated Veteran, receiving many awards including the Purple Heart and the prestigious Bronze star with “V” Device for his heroic actions in an intense battle near Dong Tre. His squad came under attack, with his squad leader immediately receiving life threatening injuries. Sgt. Hines took control of the squad, leading them through enemy fire to get them to defensive positions. He guided them with encouraging words and leadership until they gained a stable position in the fight, he then crossed heavy fire again to tend to his squad leader’s injuries before rejoining his men in the battle. His heroic actions enabled his squad to avoid enemy penetration of the perimeter of the camp, thus saving countless lives.
After returning from Vietnam, David married Elaine McDaniel. The couple had two beautiful children, but later divorced.
David was a true Patriot up until the day he died. His friends at American Legion Post 96 in Medaryville, where he was a long-term member, shared fun memories of David calling everyone “Kid” and always volunteering to be the first in “fight” should trouble come creeping around. David loved the solitude of his rural home, his dogs, mushroom hunting, fishing, canoeing, and getting some wind therapy on two wheels.
David is survived by his daughter Audrey Goins of China Grove,NC; and his son David Hines Jr. of NC. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Hali Davis (John), Mathew Price, and Steven Price all of NC; along with two great grandchildren; Mattox Davis, and MJ Price of NC. In addition he is survived by many nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Jimmy Hines who acted as David’s caregiver along with his close friend, Jessica Tarr.
David is preceded in death by his father Aubrey, mother Virginia, and his three siblings, Doug Hines, Mike Hines, and Melody Gibson.
There will be a celebration of life at the American Legion Post 93. 201 South HWY 421, Medaryville, IN on Sunday December 26th at 1pm. Friends are invited to come raise a toast to David and share memories.
