Robert Hugo George Winkler, 94, of DeMotte, Indiana passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 22, 2021.  His passing came sixteen days after that of his wife of seventy-four years.  They had an incredible love and bond where they truly could not live without each other. He is survived by his sister, Barbara Doyle, sons Michael Winkler of Lafayette and Richard (Patricia) Winkler of Loganville, Georgia; grandchildren Tammy (Craig) Snyder, Joann (Doug) Anderson, Alec Chase, Rebecca (Anthony) Baronie, Christin (Daniel) Arrendale, Michelle (José) Concepcion, Jennifer Winkler, Shane Winkler, Nicole Winkler, Eric Winkler and Matthew (Nicole) Winkler, and 15 great-grandchildren, three nieces, two nephews and several great nieces and nephews.  He was also preceded in death by his infant daughter, Rhonda, daughter Nancy Chase, son-in-law, Edward Chase, his brother, Walter William Winkler, and his parents, Robert and Mary Winkler.

Robert was born September 20, 1927 in Urbana, IL.  He graduated from Urbana High School in 1945.  When he was seventeen, he enlisted in the Navy. Soon after graduation, he was sent to Japan but never saw battle as WWII ended shortly after he arrived. He loved being in Japan and enjoyed telling stories to family and friends about his time there.  On June 1, 1947 he married Mildred Ziegler in Bondville, IL. Throughout their marriage, they lived in various places in Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana.  For most of his working years, he was employed at paint stores such as M•A•B.  He enjoyed meeting people and talking to them about paint and home projects.  Later in life, he worked for Chicagoland Christian Village where he helped residents settle into their new homes and drove the bus so they could go shopping and participate in various activities.

Bob, as he was known to most, never met a stranger.  He loved to converse with everyone and was a lifelong learner.  He spent a lot of time researching the Bible, reading various periodicals, newspapers, and christian-based and historical books.  Sharing the word of God brought him great joy and, on occasion, he was asked to preach at various churches and even volunteered his time sharing the gospel with men at several prisons.

His passions knew no bounds.  Happy to assist family and friends, Robert always needed to be doing something and was not one to sit around much.  You could count on him when someone needed help moving, wallpapering, painting, or remodeling. His talents were many, his patience immense.

Bob’s greatest moments of joy were spending time with family. He absolutely loved attending the concerts, plays, and sporting events of his grand and great- grandchildren. His love and pride for his family was forever present and felt.

Bob/grandpa/g’pa was a hero, role model and constant reminder that dedication, hard work and love were the perfect combination for a long, fulfilling life.  His greatest act of selfless love was very evident in the last few months as he nursed his loving wife until her passing.  In our eyes, ninety-four years wasn’t a long enough time with us. However, it brings us comfort to know that he is reunited with his sweet Millie, playing Rumikub and watching all of the seasons of Downton Abbey for the 115th time.

A private memorial service celebrating Robert and Mildred’s life will take place at a later date.  Condolences and correspondence may be sent to:  The Family of Robert and Mildred Winkler, 169 Lee Drive Kouts, IN 46347.
