William pursued his education at Everest College in Merrillville, Indiana. There he earned an Electrician Certificate and was recognized for his commitment with Perfect Attendance and the prestigious President’s Award. He was also CPR certified—an example of his readiness to help others and take responsibility seriously.
William devoted over two decades of his professional life to the Gary Community School Corporation, where he worked in maintenance from 1995 until his retirement in 2017. His reliability and strong work ethic made him a valued member of the team. A natural handyman and landscaper, he could often be found tending to projects around the house or helping others with theirs. Fishing trips brought him peace, while cooking allowed him to share warmth with those around him. He loved listening to jazz, rock, and blues music—sounds that filled his days with rhythm and soul.
William also enjoyed playing the lottery and spending time with friends at The Amvets in Gary. These gatherings were more than pastimes—they were moments of connection that reflected his generous spirit and good sense of humor.
Family was central to William’s life. He is lovingly remembered by his children: William B. Otero II, Mia Otero, Nyla Otero, and Jermel Brown; as well as by his grandson he helped raise, D’montra Joyce and granddaughter Nylani Brookshire. His siblings—Steve (Friedell) Otero, Myrna (Julio) Torres, Ed (Stephanie) Otero, Mary (Fred) Brignoni, and Olga Otero—mourn the loss of their brother with heavy hearts. He leaves behind six nephews and two nieces as well as great nieces and nephews.
He also leaves behind cherished friendships that stood the test of time. Gayle Alford and Sylvia R. Wright remained longtime friends whose presence brought comfort throughout the years. Robert “Duwop” Taylor was not just a best friend but a constant companion through life’s ups and downs.
William was preceded in death by his parents Esteban and Norberta Otero, his brother Mike Otero, and son Sean C. Bates.
